ENGLISH:

The photography series, Apartment I, questions different levels of self-representation and its authenticity. It is without a doubt that we can’t observe people in isolation, as one entity; we are social creatures that are a part of a social context. That is the reason why, in our own perception of ourselves, other people have a crucial role. The mere possibility of the presence of another person makes us see ourselves as an object, to see our world in a way it looks to other people. We imagine what other people could see when they look at us and then we often conform to those images. People imitate the image they think other people see. Self-representation consists of many things, but it is essential for an artist to be able to know herself/himself or even create a new ‘self’. These are the ideas we have about who we are that guide our thinking and behavior. During the time, as our goals change, those ideas change. Although those ideas may be static in a sense that they are images we refer to.

“The works are self-referential, and by exploring her own identity, the artist questions the relationship between the individual and the environment around her/him, and the mechanisms of self-representation and Lacan’s eye of the Other which oftentimes functions as an unwanted correction to one’s own meaning and impression of the self since the meaning is always created in the middle of that feedback loop, between the sent out and received, then again between the received and the sent out, i.e. between action and reaction. According to that, the artwork of Andrea Knezović contains a critical blade, questioning, almost provoking an attitude which clearly affirms the space of an individual, especially a woman who has all the right to take a position that’s outside of what society expects.”[1]

Authenticity is an exigent question when we think about self-representation. What is a reliable, accurate representation? What is it to be at one with oneself? Is it essential? Do we even care?

CROATIAN:

Serija fotografija Apartment I ispituje različite razine autoreprezentacije i njene vjerodostojnosti.

Jeli to uopće bitno?
